Let’s hope the author of this article is being funny. I’ll even bet he’s a hipster himself! The LA Weekly published an article about “the 20 worst hipster bands: the complete list”. When I read the list I said, “What the F—”, first of all… I love most of these bands listed. Second, I find the word hipster to mean high maintenance, maybe the second one is just me. Or maybe I’m considered a hipster?
Back on topic, in the article about these “hipster bands” the author explains that he feels they all sound similar, “They’re all playing variations of retro garage and soul music – or bringing glockenspiels and choirs on incestuous nationwide tours – all the while clad in vintage garb likely infested with lice.”.
Although, I do see a certain sound coming back from the late 70s, I don’t believe they sound similar. Music stages for some reason cycle back, but that’s not a bad thing. It’s exploring music history and taking something inspirational and adding your flavor to it… Making it original and making it your own.
Maybe it’s just me but Death Cab for Cutie and the Black Keys, they don’t sound alike. The Black Keys have an electric blues feel, where Death Cab for Cutie is more indie pop rock. You can tell the difference between the bands before you hear Dan or Ben sing.
Let’s get to what you really came here for, the list. According to LA Weekly here’s “the 20 worst hipster bands”, click here to read the original article.
