I’ve heard A LOT of , “They can’t remake the original!” And “An all woman cast, this is going to be dumb!”. I’ve also heard several other reasons on why this movie was going to suck but those were the two I’ve heard the most.
To answer the first complaint, there was no intention of staying true to the original story, scene for scene. This is a completely different gang with their own quirks and motivations, but the basic theme remains the same. If you haven’t seen the original ones, you’ll have no problem understanding what’s going on. Because, once again, it has nothing to do with the other movies.
The second complaint, having an all female cast… Yeah, that’s people trying to hate on the movie before it comes out. And it’s kind of sexist, so there’s that.
Overall, I will give this my real review and say it’s on the boarder of a B-, C+.
I will say that it’s a feel good, go to the theater type movie. If you wait to watch it on your TV at home, you might be a little more disappointed. What I would recommend is going during the day when it’s as cheap as possible and maybe even finding a coupon. I hate paying theater prices in general, but for this movie, it needs to be seen in the theaters. With the grade I gave it, I don’t know if I honestly would pay the full date night price.
You will laugh, it’s pretty much a family friendly movie besides a couple of parts of language, (detailed review with spoilers if you’re wanting to know what it was). There are some surprises and Kate McKinnon really stole the show with her character.
Just a heads up, this section of the review will go into more detail, revealing some of the surprises, and details of the movie. It won’t reveal everything, but maybe just enough to take your viewing virginity.
Parents, the language part is pretty much clean. The only part that I can remember is when Kristen Wiig and Melissa McCarthy are in Melissa’s boss’ office and the boss, played by Steve Higgins, does several corny flipping off jokes. Other than that, I can’t think of anything that is inappropriate. Wait there’s one more about farting out of your frontside.
It was great to see several people from the classic Ghostbusters be cast in the movie in addition to Bill Murray. I love Bill Murray, but he mentioned in a interview a while back that he supports the new movie and that he will be appearing in it.
You’ll also see, Dan Aykroyd, Sigourney Weaver, Ernie Hudson, and Annie Potts in the movie.
I was SO excited that Ozzy Osbourne, was in it for a moment and that they casted Zach Woods to play a small role in it. Zach Woods plays Jared in Silicon Valley… I’m absolutely in love with his character and that show. There’s actually a LOT of big names in this movie too, that I think you already know will be in there.
As mentioned earlier, Kate McKinnon stole the show. Her character was fantastic and she played it perfectly. She didn’t have the most lines but her reaction to the situations made the scenes that much better.
The basic plot line isn’t anything new. You have a group of scientists, engineers and people experienced in the paranormal get together to figure out how to catch/fight ghosts. Since this cast is different this time around, the story goes through it all. The start of the group, how each one gets hired, their purpose in the group, etc… There’s an evil character, of course, and they save New York City.
You do get to see Slimer, he comes back for a section at the end. And the original logo makes it in the movie.
As for the music, we’ve all heard the terrible soundtrack that Fall Out Boy made. I think you hear MAYBE 10 seconds of it in the middle of the movie but for the most part, they stick to the theme song played instrumentally.
The movie was made for the younger generation to have their own Ghostbusters like we did growing up. So, when they grow up they can be like, “Agh, they can’t remake Ghostbusters! It’s not going to be as the good as the one we watched growing up!”. I prefer the original but this wasn’t TOO bad. It’s was just an ok movie. I wouldn’t balk at watching it again, but I don’t think I would be pulling more money out of my pocket to do it. Review score of a B-, C+.
